BMW B58 Engine Maintenance Schedule

Widely regarded as one of BMW's most reliable modern engines — which isn't the same as “no maintenance opinions.”

The B58 (340i, 440i, M340i, Z4 M40i, Toyota Supra) has earned a strong reliability reputation, and deservedly so — but "reliable" doesn't mean "identical to every other BMW engine's maintenance needs." A few things are specifically worth knowing.

B58-specific quick reference
Oil spec
BMW Longlife-01 FE (check your exact build date/market)
Oil interval
CBS-calculated, typically ~10,000 mi; many owners choose 5,000–7,500 mi given the turbo
Spark plugs
Generally healthy to 40,000–60,000 mi — less plug-sensitive than the older N54
Carbon buildup
Direct injection means some buildup over time — less severe than earlier BMW turbo engines

Oil: the one place B58 owners most often deviate from the official schedule

The B58 runs a single twin-scroll turbo fed from a wet-sump system, and while BMW's official CBS interval is engineered to be safe, the enthusiast and independent-specialist community that tracks this engine closely often prefers 5,000–7,500 mile changes anyway — the same logic that applies to other turbocharged BMW engines: shorter intervals keep oil viscosity more consistent under sustained higher-boost driving than the official interval assumes.

Carbon buildup — real, but less dramatic than older BMW turbos

Direct injection engines (the B58 included) don't get fuel washing the backs of the intake valves the way older port-injection engines did, so some carbon deposit buildup over tens of thousands of miles is expected. The B58 is generally considered less prone to this than earlier-generation BMW turbo engines, but it isn't immune — a walnut-shell intake valve cleaning is the typical remedy if symptoms (rough idle, slight power loss) appear, usually well past 60,000 miles for most owners.

What's genuinely different from a generic BMW schedule

Coolant, brake fluid, and transmission fluid intervals largely follow the same logic as any modern BMW (see our full maintenance schedule guide) — the B58-specific items are really just oil interval philosophy and awareness of carbon buildup as a known (if not urgent) characteristic of the engine design.

The B58 has several revisions across its production run (B58B30M0, B58B30O0, B58B30O1, and Toyota's variant) — always confirm specifics against your exact engine code, not just "B58" as a category.
