Ask a BMW owner what they drive and you might get "an E46" before you get "a 3 Series" — chassis codes are the enthusiast community's actual shorthand, because unlike the model name, a chassis code pins down a specific generation with a specific set of engines, suspension design, and known maintenance quirks.

How the letter progression works

BMW's internal codes moved through E (Entwicklung, "development") for most of the company's modern history, then F, and now G for the current generation — each letter roughly marking a full platform redesign, not just a facelift. Within a letter, the number identifies the specific model/body: the second and third digits often (not always, especially in later generations) hint at the body style.
